I did some research on this back in the mid 90's. I wanted to do the same thing and ran into the similar comments. "Why do you want to make it go faster".....DUH!!! Why wouldn't you want to make it go faster? 80mph just doesnt cut it these days on a 75mph interstate highway. If you get boxed in by trucks, you want to be able to roll the throttle back and get out of a bad situation.
What I found is that the HD pitch was different, which would cause the belt to mis-mesh and wear very quickly. I wish you better luck and hope that HD has some other designs that I missed.
If not, my Bro-n-law is going to the University of Wyoming this next year and will be taking Mechanical Engineering. He has to do a project in CAD/CAM and I suggested that he make a 15% reduced sprocket. If it turns out well, we may try to partner up with a CAD/CAM company and make these for our Savage brothers out there.
The bike has plenty of horsepower and more than enough torque to pull a smaller pulley, especially if you get its RPMs back down where it wants to run the best.
Keep your research up, let me know what you come up with. I have a 03'Vulcan 1500 now, but my Bro-n-law now has my Savage and I am still partial to the bike.
